The Albufeira Skate Park, located in Cidade Desportiva, close to the Sports Pavilion and the Municipal Swimming Pools, underwent renovation works, including the standardization of lighting in terms of light intensity. These improvements allow nighttime sports to be practiced in excellent conditions, benefiting all users.
As part of the intervention, lighting was also installed on the surrounding pedestrian path, increasing safety conditions in the Skate Park and the surrounding area. The work, completed in December 2024, involved an investment of around R$100,000 and resulted in a 50% reduction in energy consumption, in addition to an annual decrease of R$5,000 in maintenance costs.
Built in 2007, the Albufeira Skate Park is free to enter and was considered one of the biggest and best extreme parks on the Iberian Peninsula. Prepared for disciplines such as skateboarding, BMX freestyle and inline skating, it hosted important events, such as the “Odessa Skate Series” and the Albufeira Skate Challenge, the first edition of which took place in 2022.
The president of , José Carlos Rolo, stated that “improving the energy and technological efficiency of municipal buildings, particularly sports equipment, constitutes one of the municipality’s priority concerns”.
In the last two years, the municipality carried out several interventions in sports infrastructure, including the installation of LED lighting in different courts and pavilions, totaling an investment of more than R$544 thousand. These measures resulted in savings of up to 70% in energy consumption and an annual reduction in maintenance costs of around 24,500 euros.
Regarding the Skate Park, José Carlos Rolo highlighted “the importance of promoting sport for everyone, a commitment that is part of the objectives set out in the candidacy for European City of Sport 2026, which we won, which increases our responsibility, both at the level organizing events accessible to all age groups (children, young people, elderly people, people with reduced mobility) or with regard to the construction and maintenance of sports infrastructures”.
The vice-president of the municipality, Cristiano Cabrita, highlighted that “the radical activities that can be practiced at the Skate Park, whether freely or competitively, are very well received by the young population of the municipality”. This type of equipment confirms Albufeira’s commitment to supporting sport in various modalities, always integrating environmental concerns.
In the specific case of the Skate Park, “in addition to the main objective of improving and safety of the facilities and surrounding area, we highlight the issue of energy efficiency and reducing operating costs”.
In addition to this park, Albufeira has a skate ramp in Vale Faro Park, also considered one of the best in the country.
These initiatives reinforce the municipality’s commitment to sustainability, the promotion of sport and the continuous improvement of the conditions offered to populations and visitors.
