O National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) approved financing of R$800 million to support the measurement digitalization plan of three energy distribution concessionaires in the CPFL Energia.

Amount will be allocated to replacement of energy meters current (electromechanical or electronic) by smart meters and is part of the concessionaires’ plan, expected to extend until 2029, with an estimated cost of more than R$1.2 billion.

The change is made to facilitate the transmission of consumption data, which becomes remote with the change, without the need for manual monthly consumption readings.

The resources will be allocated to three companies controlled by the CPFL holding company, which provide public service distribution of electrical energy:

  • R$326.3 million for CPFL Paulista, which serves around 5 million customers in 234 municipalities in São Paulo;
  • R$411.4 million for CPFL Piratininga, with 2 million customers in 27 municipalities in São Paulo;
  • R$62.1 million for CPFL Santa Cruz, with 511 thousand customers in 45 municipalities in São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná.

Only the concessionaire Rio Grande Energia (RGE) will not be covered by the investment approved by the development bank.

In total, CPFL distribution concessionaires serve around 10.6 million customers distributed in the states of São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais and Paraná.

“This is the first investment plan for the implementation of smart meters approved by BNDES. The project will result in the acquisition of innovative, nationally manufactured equipment, which offers various technological resources for managing energy consumption, ensuring agility in the services provided by distributors, benefiting consumers”, explains the president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante.
