Civil Protection records 14 floods in the Algarve due to bad weather

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) recorded between 00:00 and 07:00 this Wednesday 71 incidents due to strong rain and wind, most of them flooding, but without causing any casualties.

“We had 71 incidents in the national territory related to bad weather, 51 of which were floods. The most affected areas were Algarve with 14, the Setúbal Peninsula with 13, Greater Lisbon with eight and the others were divided by the rest of the territory in smaller numbers”, Elísio Pereira from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) told the Lusa agency.

Among the incidents, civil protection highlights a situation of extreme wind, on the Setúbal Peninsula.

“We recorded a [caso] of extreme wind on Estrada Nacional 253 between Alcácer do Sal and Comporta, in an area where there are no houses. There were trees and power lines down here. Road circulation has already been reestablished in the meantime and communication companies are currently assessing the damage to their infrastructure. We do not have information on the person or residences affected,” he said.

On Monday, ANEPC issued an alert to the population regarding the worsening of the weather in mainland Portugal until this Wednesday, with heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, and alerts for preventive measures.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Porto under yellow due to the forecast of rain, sometimes heavy, accompanied by thunder, and occasionally hail until 6pm today.

Aveiro, Viseu, Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Lisbon, Portalegre, Évora, Setúbal, Beja and Faro are under yellow warning until midnight on Thursday.

Due to the maritime unrest, the districts of Lisbon, Faro, Setúbal and Beja are under orange warning until 9am today, then turning to yellow until 3pm today.

The Madeira archipelago is also under yellow warning until 3pm on Thursday due to the state of the sea and until 3am on Thursday due to sometimes heavy rain.

The orange warning is issued whenever there is a moderate to high risk meteorological situation and the yellow warning is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
