The British actress Judi Dench90, revealed that her vision loss has progressed to the point where she needs a companion whenever she leaves her residence.
The Oscar winner lives with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an eye condition that can culminate in and is the main cause of visual impairment in people over 50 years old.
who first spoke about the diagnosis in 2012, shared an update on her health. “Someone will always be with me. Now it has to be like this because I can’t see and I could bump into something or fall”, she began during her appearance on the Fearless podcast.
“I always get nervous before going somewhere. I don’t understand why… I’m not good at being alone, anyway, but now I couldn’t be if I wanted to either. And, fortunately, I don’t need it anymore because I pretend I don’t have vision”, he joked.
At an event held in 2021 by the Vision Foundation, a charity dedicated to vision loss, the screen veteran spoke about the impact of the disability on her career.
“You find a way to just adapt and overcome things that you find very difficult. I had to find another way to memorize my lineswhich is counting on great friends to repeat them over and over again. So I learn by repetition and I just hope people don’t understand too much if the lines are completely wrong!”
The actress had already opened up about her limitations in an interview with The Graham Norton Show. On that occasion, Judi, who Used to rely on your photographic memory to memorize linesrevealed how complicated this has become.
“I need to find a machine that will not only teach me my lines, but also tell me where they appear on the page. I found it very easy to learn lines and remember them. I could do ‘Twelfth Night’ [peça de William Shakespeare] whole right now.”
