One person was killed and another injured today in a fire in the port of Catalonia, emergency services in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, said, adding that the resulting fire had been extinguished.

In a post on Platform X, the agencies said the explosion occurred during maintenance work at the so-called “Energy Pier”, where chemicals, natural gas and refined petroleum products are loaded.

In a statement, Barcelona city hall said it received a notification “of a fire caused by an explosion of a transport tank” at 10:40 a.m. and then activated the chemical hazard emergency plan.

Companies in the area have asked their staff to limit their travel as a precautionary measure, the statement added.
