US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called the episcopal bishop of Washington “disgusting” and demanded an apology. He responded to her sermon in Washington’s National Cathedral by saying that she was spreading fear among immigrants and LGBTQ people in the country, TASR writes, according to an AFP report.
“The so-called bishop who spoke at the national prayer Tuesday morning was a radical leftist who hates Trump,” the president wrote on his Truth Social social network.
“She brought her church into the world of politics in a very unsparing way. She had a nasty tone and was not persuasive or smart,” Trump wrote after the presidential inauguration service. It was led by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde at the Washington National Cathedral.
On Monday, Trump issued orders to suspend the arrival of asylum seekers to the country and to deport migrants who are in the US illegally. His new administration disabled an app called CBP One that allowed for pre-screening of asylum seekers before entering the US. He also decided that the US government under his leadership would recognize only “two sexes – male and female”.
Trump sat in the first pew of the church next to his wife Melania during the inauguration service. During the sermon, Budde appealed to the president “to have mercy on the people in our country who are now afraid.” After the service, Trump responded that “she was not good”, writes AFP.
The President on Social Truh slandered the bishop without naming her directly. “Besides her inappropriate statements, this service was very boring and lifeless. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology,” he added.
In the past, the bishop criticized Trump for “using sacred symbols” while “taking positions that are contrary to the Bible.”
