The number of indebted families showed a slight drop, from 77.6% in 2023 to 76.7% last year
A recent survey by the National Commerce Confederation brought to light a worrying increase in defaults among the population of . In December last year, almost 30% of São Paulo residents were in arrears, marking growth compared to the same period in 2023. This increase contrasts with the national trend, where the number of indebted families showed a slight drop, from 77.6 % in 2023 to 76.7% in 2024. However, it reached an all-time high of 29.3%, with 13% of households facing outstanding debt.
The impact was most severe among low-income families, with around 80.5% of them facing debt in the last year. The research suggests that consumer caution, influenced by high interest rates and inflation, contributed to the reduction in overall debt. High interest rates and inflation increase credit costs, particularly affecting low-income families.
Despite this, there was a slight improvement in the average commitment of income to debt, which fell to 29.8%, while the average term for repayment rose to around 7.4 months, indicating an effort for more favorable payment conditions. Looking ahead to 2025, the economic outlook remains challenging, with high interest rates and persistent inflation expected. Experts emphasize the need for greater financial education and effective policies for debt renegotiation as solutions to face this scenario.
