Administrative-institutional center will have a period of 15 days to express its opinion on the justification presented; Mayor of SP says that the construction of the barrier prevents incidents and facilitates the work of professionals

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) the defense presented by the mayor of São Paulo, regarding what separates users of Cracolândia from pedestrians and vehicles. The PGR will have 15 days to comment on the justification presented. Nunes argued that the construction of the wall has a preventive and protective nature, with the aim of avoiding accidents in the area. The need to justify the work arose after a request from parliamentarians who requested the demolition of the structure, claiming that it contributes to social exclusion. The STF’s notification to the mayor took place on Monday (20), establishing a deadline of 24 hours for Nunes to present his response.

The mayor highlighted that the installation of the fences facilitates the work of the Health and Social Assistance teams, allowing better communication with users of Cracolândia. The issue reached the STF following a petition from PSOL parliamentarians, who argued that the work represents a form of social exclusion and hinders the implementation of effective public policies. In his defense, Nunes refuted this allegation, presenting maps and photographs that illustrate the situation at the site, in addition to criticizing the time spent discussing the wall, emphasizing that the structure is open and does not confine users.
