The trip is part of the contacts that the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance promotes with member states, namely to begin preparations for the NATO summit, which this year takes place in The Hague.

The Secretary General of NATO will travel to Lisbon on Monday to meet with the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Defense, it was announced today.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced that Mark Rutte, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, will be in Lisbon on Monday, with an agenda that includes meetings with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and with the ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, and National Defense, Nuno Melo.

Joint statements with Luís Montenegro are planned.

The trip is part of the contacts that the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance promotes with member states, namely to begin preparations for the NATO summit, which this year takes place in The Hague.

Portugal is one of the founding countries of NATO, a political-military organization that was created on April 4, 1949.

Among the topics to be addressed during this trip will be the challenge made by Mark Rutte for Member States to invest more in defense, but also the position defended by the new President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, who demands an investment of the Domestic Product Gross GDP (GDP) in defense in the order of 5%.

Portugal plans to reach 2% of GDP in defense in 2029.

Also on Monday, Mark Rutte travels to Spain, where he will meet Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
