On Wednesday, on the Truth Social social network, US President Donald Trump called on his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to agree to an agreement to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible. Otherwise, according to Trump, the United States will impose “high taxes, duties and sanctions” on everything Russia sells to them and other countries. TASR informs about it.
“I don’t want to hurt Russia. I like the Russians and I have always had a very good relationship with President Putin… We must never forget that Russia helped us win World War II at the cost of almost 60 million lives,” Trump wrote in the post.
In this context, he further said that he is going to Russia, whose economy, according to him, is failing. At the same time, he asked Putin for a “kindness”. “Settle it and stop this ridiculous war! It will only get worse,” emphasized the old American president.
He also repeated his claim that if he, and not Joe Biden, had been president during the previous election period, the war in Ukraine would not have happened at all.
“We can do it easy or hard – and the easy way is always better. It’s time to reach an agreement. No more lives should be lost!!!” Trump emphasized.
On Monday after his inauguration, he spoke of Putin “destroying Russia” by still not agreeing to end the war. According to Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is willing to come to an agreement.
In the campaign before the presidential elections, Trump declared several times that he would reach an agreement between Russia and Ukraine on the very first day of his inauguration, if not earlier – which ultimately did not happen.
In late October, he made a subtle shift in rhetoric and began saying that he could resolve the war “very quickly.” After being elected, he softened it even more and says that he will simply “solve” the conflict. He has not yet indicated a specific plan.
But despite his earlier promises to end the war in Ukraine quickly, Trump advisers contacted by Reuters now admit it will take months, if not longer.
