The likely victory of (-PB) in the election for the presidency will not change the opposition that the PT makes to the parliamentarian’s political group in Paraíba. This is what the president of the PT party in the state, Jackson Macêdo, says.
Hugo Motta’s father, Nabor Wanderley, is mayor of Patos, 306 kilometers from João Pessoa. In 2024, he was re-elected for a fourth term as head of the municipal Executive.
“We have been in opposition for many years [à família Motta]. This continues and the PT reaffirms itself as the opposition. We already made an alliance with the Motta family a few years ago, but there was a political rupture”, he said.
Last year, the PT launched a candidacy against Hugo Motta’s father, but ended up in third place, with 2.97% of the valid votes, compared to 73.76% for the re-elected mayor.
“Even though we have differences with him [Hugo Motta]who is a deputy with a future in politics and the son of a traditional, conservative family, son of yet another oligarchy, we are happy to have a man from Paraíba as president of the Chamber”, says the PT leader.
Macêdo hopes for a more respectful relationship between the Chamber under Motta’s management and the Lula government. “Arthur Lira transformed this relationship into a business of distribution of parliamentary amendments, which stops the country when the amendments are not distributed. We want a republican and respectful relationship”, says the president of the PT of Paraíba.
With Hugo taking office as mayor, the expectation in the PT of Paraíba is that there will be an alliance between the party and the group of governor João Azevedo (PSB) in the 2026 elections.
PT members believe that President Lula would not become upset and disagree with a platform in which Motta must nominate a name for the Senate race.
Initially, the deputy was tipped to be a candidate for senator, but would run for command of the Chamber again in 2027.
The other Senate vacancy in the alliance must be occupied by Governor João Azevedo.
