The city of São Paulo turns 471 years old, next Saturday (25), and the date is recognized as a municipal holiday in the capital of São Paulo.
According to historians, the date refers to the moment when the Jesuits founded Colégio São Paulo in order to catechize indigenous people who lived around the Anhangabaú and Tamanduateí rivers.
Despite only being recognized as a city in the 18th century, over time, São Paulo became one of the largest urban centers in the southern hemisphere of the planet.
However, January 25th is only considered as municipal holidaythat is, only in the capital of São Paulo. In other municipalities, it is not a public holiday.
