After celebrating on social media the inauguration of , which , the governor (Republicans) announced this Wednesday (20) a series of actions by his administration to combat the effects of global warming in .
The measures include the creation of a council with decision-making power over public actions, which will include the participation of municipalities and civil society, and the planting of 100,000 tree seedlings on the banks of the Pinheiros River, carried out by Emae, an energy company recently privatized.
The initiatives are part of a state plan, launched last year, in the wake of flooding that left thousands of people homeless in Rio Grande do Sul. The plan is led by the Secretary of Infrastructure and Logistics, Natalia Resende.
Both at the launch of the plan, last year, and this Wednesday, Tarcísio avoided speaking to journalists after the announcements. The topic is sensitive, as part of the governor’s Bolsonaro base denies the existence of climate change, just like Trump.
It was up to Natalia Resende, in her speech, to state that facing climate change “is a challenge not only in Brazil, but worldwide”.
After the speeches, the secretary was questioned by journalists about the impacts of the American president’s decision, praised by the governor, but avoided a political analysis. He said that the withdrawal of those from the climate agreement “does not change the planning” of actions in São Paulo.
In his speech, the governor highlighted his administration’s measures as sustainability projects that also promote economic development, citing the generation of clean energy. “With regard to mitigating effects and climate adaptation, we have a series of actions underway,” he stated.
