An additional 1,500 troops will be sent to the US-Mexico border
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the entry of immigrants at the southern border with Mexico, Reuters reports, citing a statement from the White House.
Trump also ordered the deployment of 1,500 additional troops to the United States border with Mexico, where he maintains his desire to build a wall.
According to CNN, there are already about 2,200 active-duty troops on the border as part of Joint Task Force-North, the US Northern Command’s border mission based in El Paso, Texas. In practice, these troops help support the work of U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the border, primarily performing logistical and bureaucratic tasks such as data entry, detection and monitoring, and vehicle maintenance.
Donald Trump assured on Monday that he will expel “millions and millions” of illegal immigrants, one of the main promises of his election campaign, during which he promised to carry out the “largest mass deportation in the history” of the country.
Shortly after taking office, Trump declared a “national emergency” at the border and wants to block asylum requests at that border.
On the first day of Donald Trump’s second term in the White House, the US federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency detained 308 illegal immigrants, including those accused of murder and rape.
