Women and men in Austria have been legally equal since 1980. Equality is anchored in the federal constitution and an explicit goal of budget policy. Reforms have changed crusted gender -specific role attributions and led to women in the education system and the labor market in recent decades: 20 percent of women and 17 percent of men have a university degree. Between 1980 and 2023, the proportion of working women rose from 52.5 to 68.2 percent, which the men fell by 3.4 percentage points to 78.3 percent.
