São Paulo councilor Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil) presented a bill in the City Council that prohibits the display in public buildings in the city of flags or symbols of movements such as the MST and identity groups, such as those linked to the LGBTQI+ cause.
According to the councilor’s project, only the city’s official flag would be allowed to be displayed in places such as public offices, health centers or schools.
According to Nunes, the inspiration for the project came from an announcement by the recently sworn-in US president, .
“It cannot be accepted that flags and symbols of associations, social movements and similar groups have equal or greater prominence than official municipal symbols in public buildings maintained with resources from the population”, says the councilor in justifying the project.
