A federal judge temporarily suspended one of the orders signed by Donald Trump shortly after his inauguration, on Monday (20), which ends the right to American citizenship of children of immigrants born in the United States.
Judge John C. Coughenour, from Seattle, made the decision after the states of Arizona, Illinois, Oregon and Washington questioned Trump’s act, arguing that it violates the Constitution and the jurisprudence of the country’s Supreme Court.
Trump’s order would take effect in 30 days and directs federal agencies not to issue citizenship documents to such children.
This goes against the guarantee, rooted in common law and enshrined in the American Constitution for more than 150 years, that anyone born in the United States is automatically an American citizen.
