South Korean court on Friday rejected the prosecution’s request to extend the detention of suspended President Jun Sok-jol until February 6. TASR informs about it according to a report by the Jonhap agency.

The prosecutor’s office, which is investigating Jun for declaring martial law on December 3, asked for an extension of the detention on Friday. She made the request a day after the Corruption Perceptions Office (CIO) handed over the case to the prosecutor’s office, as it is not within his authority to indict the president. However, a court in Seoul rejected the request on Friday, saying that the prosecutor’s office should not investigate the case since it had already been referred to the CIO.

Under South Korean law the suspect may be detained for ten days with the possibility of an extension of another ten days. Jun Sok-jol was arrested on Sunday, Jonhap recalls.

Due to the rejection of the application, he now has the prosecutor’s office only a few days to interrogate Jun, who, however, has so far refused to cooperate with the CIO’s interrogations.

President Jun is accused of rebellion due to the declaration of martial law in early December and abuse of power. when he sent soldiers to parliament with the intention of preventing the deputies from repealing martial law. However, the Parliament still abolished martial law and suspended him from the presidency.

In addition to the investigation into suspected crimes, the process of Juno’s removal from office (impeachment) is ongoing. Parliament decided on his dismissal back in December, and since then he has been deprived of his powers. The Constitutional Court will decide on his definitive removal from office.
