Specialist of the Coimbra Agrarian Higher School warn that the current model of forest cleaning and fires protection ranges is wrong. They consider that total deforestation is not a solution for fire fighting.
The idea is to change the paradigm and the type of interventions in the forest when cleaning. The forest in the Agrarian School of Coimbra serves to form forest sappers and demonstrate that the work done usually becomes an infinite cycle that favors the fires.
Instead of cleaning where all organic material is removed, there is a selection of plants that should remain on the ground and will grow until they form a less sunlight. Over time, the idea is that fires can be controlled more easily and cause fewer damage.
The ultimate goal is to create a forest with much more sustainable management.
