External accounts have the highest annual deficit in 5 years in 2024

Current transactions recorded a negative balance of US$55.97 billion from January to December, an increase of 128.3% compared to 2023

Brazil’s external accounts recorded a deficit of US$55.97 billion in 2024, announced the (Central Bank) this Friday (24 January 2025). This is the largest annual negative balance since 2019. The historical series began in 1995.

The negative balance of Brazil’s external accounts rose 128,3% compared to 2023, when the deficit was US$24.52 billion in 2023. The data is in the Central Bank’s external sector statistics report. Here is it (PDF – 253 kB).

The monetary authority calculates current transactions in the external sector in Brazil on a monthly basis. It considers the balance of trade (exports and imports), the services purchased by Brazilians abroad and the financial movement of income, such as remittances of interest, profits and dividends to other countries.

The deficit of US$55.97 billion in 2024 represents 2.55% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). In 2023, it was 1.12% of GDP.

The trade balance recorded a surplus of US$66.22 billion in 2024. It fell compared to 203, when it totaled US$92.28 billion. The drop was US$26.06 billion.

Primary income had a deficit of US$75.40 billion compared to the negative balance of US$79.49 billion in the previous year.

DIRECT INVESTMENT

The deficit in Brazil’s public accounts was compensated with the inflow of foreign investment. The balance of IDP (Direct Investment in the Country) was US$71.1 billion in 2024, which corresponds to 3.24% of GDP.
