This weekend, the new (MASP) building, Na, will open its gates for free visitation and dramatic readings. This event marks a significant moment for the city of São Paulo, which is widely recognized for its rich cultural diversity. Paulista Avenue, in particular, is a vibrant center of culture, housing a variety of renowned museums, such as Japan House, Sesc, Casa das Rosas, Itaú Cultural, FIESP, Cultural Reserve and Moreira Salles Institute.
MASP, one of the most beloved museums for both Paulistanos and tourists, attracted 580,000 visitors in 2024 and was highlighted as one of the most popular museums globally, according to Google data. With the inauguration of the new attached building, the number of visitors is expected to be, reaching the 1 million mark.
The new building, named Pietro Maria Bardi, pays tribute to the first artistic director of the MASP and husband of architect Lina Bo Bardi, who projected the iconic original building of the museum. PAULO VICELLI, MASP’s Director of Experience and Communication, emphasized the importance of recognizing the founders of the museum through this tribute. The official opening of the Annex is scheduled for March 28. The building will feature 14 floors, including underground, laboratories, a restaurant and space dedicated to MASP School.
However, this weekend, the Pietro building will exceptionally open its doors to celebrate the city’s anniversary at a special event called Prelude. Parallel to the inauguration of the new building, the MASP is undergoing significant reforms, with a conclusion also expected to March 28. The famous gap, now under the museum’s administration, will be integrated into cultural programming, offering a safe and dynamic space for exhibitions and coexistence. After the inauguration, the works will continue outside, including the construction of a tunnel that will connect Paulista Avenue to the subway, facilitating the access of visitors.
