An innovation developed by a Portuguese company is about to turn the experience of shopping at the supermarket. Imagine you don’t need to pass barcodes or face queues in the box. This technology, already in the testing phase in Portugal, uses a system that automatically records products placed on the cart or shopping basket, simplifying the payment process.
How does technology work?
The system is based on a combination of chambers installed above the shelves and scales that detect changes in the weight of the products, as explained. The cameras record all customer movements and identify the items taken or returned to the shelves. Thus, if you take a product just to analyze and decide not buy it, it will not be charged, provided you return to the original place.
Upon reaching the box, the customer does not need to remove the products from the cart. The system has already registered the items and the payment can be made directly. In addition to simplifying the consumer experience, this technology offers stores a more rigorous and real -time control of the available stock.
Benefits for customers and stores
The new solution promises advantages for both consumers and retailers. According to Marlos Silva, responsible for the innovation of Sonae MC, “we know exactly what we have on the shelves, we know where they are and therefore this brings great efficiency gains.” The need management can reduce waste and improve product replacement.
Technology also eliminates the need for conventional boxes, which can reduce operating costs and improve customer experience, allowing for faster and more convenient purchases.
Future perspectives
The development of this technology demonstrates how Portuguese innovation is contributing to the digital transformation of the retail sector. Although it is still in the testing phase, the solution has great potential to be implemented on a large scale, changing the way we shop in the supermarket in the future.
