125.2 million watched films on the big screen in 2024, an increase of 9.6% compared to the previous year; in 2019, there were 172.5 million
The number of cinemas operating in Brazil broke a record in 2024. At the end of the year, there were 3,509, an increase of 1.2% compared to the previous year and a level 0.9% higher than 2019, before the pandemic. The data is from the (National Cinema Agency).
This number also surpasses the 1970s, when there was a “boom” in the sector and many rooms were opened in a short space of time.
Despite continued growth, the public did not return with the same strength as before the health crisis. Last year, 125.2 million people watched films on the big screen, compared to 114.3 million in 2023 and 172.5 million in 2019.
The biggest box office of 2024 was “”, by , which took 22.2 million people to the cinema and had revenue of R$442.1 million. 2nd and 3rd place were also taken by animations: “” and “”.
The only Brazilian film among the 10 most watched was “”, directed by Walter Salles. It came in 6th place (despite having a higher income than “A Forja”). The film, in the categories of best international film, best film and best actress, with Fernanda Torres.
