This Algarve beach is a surfing destination and stands out for its imposing cliffs

Known for its natural beauty and ideal conditions for outdoor activities, this beach is a perfect refuge for those looking for a closer connection with nature. In addition to being a popular destination among surfers, this beach in the Algarve stands out for the grandeur of its cliffs and the tranquility of its surrounding landscape.

Located on the Costa Vicentina, in the municipality of Aljezur, Praia da Bordeira, also known as Praia da Carrapateira, is one of the most impressive and extensive beaches on the Portuguese coast. With a length of more than three kilometers, this destination stands out for its natural beauty, imposing cliffs and for being an excellent place for surfing.

A destination for surfers, families and nature lovers

Originally frequented by fishermen and naturists, Praia da Bordeira is now a popular destination for surfers, both beginners and experienced surfers. The rough seas during autumn and winter offer challenging conditions for the more skilled, whilst in summer the gentler waves are ideal for those just learning. The northern end of the beach continues to be an area reserved for naturism, although less frequently than in the past.

In addition to surfing, Praia da Bordeira is perfect for long walks. Its vast expanse of golden sand, framed by dunes and the Carrapateira river, provides an ideal setting for exploring on foot. At the south end, the river occasionally forms a lagoon next to the ocean, and this area is very popular with families with children due to the safety and tranquility of the shallow waters.

Infrastructures and amenities

Despite preserving a natural and wild environment, the beach has some support infrastructure. During the swimming season, there is lifeguard supervision, and visitors can enjoy a seasonal bar, which offers surfboards and surf equipment for rent. The lack of shelter from the wind makes this beach colder than others in the region, and the waters are known for their low temperature, which requires extra attention when entering the sea due to the currents.

Point of interest: the viewpoint and the village of Carrapateira

At the top of the cliff, there is a viewpoint with panoramic views that take your breath away. For those looking to explore local culture, the village of Carrapateira, just a few minutes from the beach, offers the Museu do Mar e da Terra, a small space that celebrates the history and daily life of the region, with emphasis on maritime life.

How to get there and beaches nearby

Praia da Bordeira is located about three hours from Lisbon and 25 minutes from Aljezur. There is free parking both next to the beach and at the viewpoint. There is no public transport available, so you must use your own vehicle.

For those wanting to explore more of the Costa Vicentina, nearby beaches include Praia do Amado, to the south, known for its surfing conditions, and Praia de Vale Figueiras, to the north, popular with surfers and naturists.
