The historic activist from Portimão, in the Algarve, founder of the PSD’s Festa do Pontal and former deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, Filipe Abreu, passed away this Saturday at the age of 77, social-democratic deputy Cristóvão Norte told Lusa.
“Filipe Abreu leaves an inspiring legacy, an exemplary civic sense, an unforgettable service to his land, his region and his country”, said the vice-president of the parliamentary group of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in the Assembly of the Republic.
According to Cristóvão Norte, even with the difficulties he had in the last years of his life, Filipe Abreu continued to have “many ideas and an inspiring will to live”.
Filipe Abreu was a municipal councilor in Portimão and several times a candidate for the council’s presidency, deputy for three legislatures and for a short period in the 70s of the last century president of the PSD/Algarve.
The historic leader of Francisco Sá Carneiro called Filipe Abreu to Lisbon for a meeting in 1976 to discuss how to boost the party in the Algarve region.
According to Cristóvão Norte, it was at this meeting that it was decided to organize a popular event, later celebrated as Festa do Pontal, with Filipe Abreu being responsible for its organization.
The traditional Festa do Pontal, which annually, in August, marks the political ‘return’ of the Social Democrats began by taking place in the Pontal pine forest, at the access to Faro airport, and is now held on the Quarteira promenade, in the municipality of Loulé.
