The former president () stated this Friday (24) that he had the dream of returning to command Brazil and defended amnesty for those convicted of the coup acts of January 8, 2023.
“I dream of returning to command this country. I’m not obsessed with power, I have a passion for Brazil”, he said in an interview given alongside (PL-RJ) on a Revista Oeste program.
Bolsonaro is prevented from running until 2030 due to abuse of political power and misuse of the media during the 2022 presidential campaign.
The former president also spoke about the expectation of voting on the project that grants amnesty to those convicted of January 8, 2023, which he once again defended, with the elections for the presidency of Congress approaching.
Regarding the episode, Bolsonaro criticized the accusations against him that he had incited the coup acts on that date, claiming that he was not in the country at the time. “I was outside Brazil, in Orlando, I had Goofy and Minnie by my side. It was laughable.”
Bolsonaro left Brazil in the last days of his term and thus avoided the symbolic act of transmitting power to his successor. He was in the United States during the coup attacks on .
Asked about the succession of commands of the two Houses, Bolsonaro spoke of the choice to support Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) for the Senate as a way of maintaining political strength and participation in decisions.
“We dreamed of electing Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) in February 2023, he had around 33 votes. We did our best and lost, and when you lose, you are left with no board of directors and no vacancy on the commission”, he stated.
The former president also commented on his inability to travel outside the country. Bolsonaro’s passport is withheld by the courts due to investigations of which he is the target, such as the attempted coup d’état in 2022, which prevented him from attending the inauguration of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
“I confess that I had hopes [de ir]because after all I am not a defendant. The accusations are ‘narrative’, but unfortunately the decisions were contrary”, he said. “I felt shaken [por não ir]I am a human being, I get emotional. I’m in love with my wife and obviously she went there alone. Had the company of Eduardo [Bolsonaro] and participated in events.”
Bolsonaro’s defense requested the release of the former president’s passport for the inauguration ceremony on January 20th, but the request was denied by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
