Mayor of Rio says he is against the process, “but that doesn’t mean the police can do everything”; one person died in operation
The mayor of Rio, (PSD), stated this Friday (January 24, 2025) that the debate on the ADPF (Argument of Non-Compliance with Fundamental Precepts) “from the favelas”, which will be judged by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) in November 2024, it is “poorly managed”. He demanded that the governor (PL) contribute by bringing more clarity to the discussion.
“That ADPF issue in Rio, swhether in the real field or in the symbolic field, became an inhibitor of police action. A my impression is that, since this ADPF was implemented, there was an increase of occupation and of the territorial domain“, he told journalists at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília, after a meeting with the president (PT).
The mayor of Rio, re-elected in 2024, said he was against the ADPF, but, according to him, this does not mean that the police are authorized to “do everything”.
The action in the Supreme Court, which gained prominence for asking police officers to wear cameras on their uniforms, is the target of criticism from members of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro for “make it difficult” the work of police officers in favelas.
Paes was asked about the violent action of security agents in Rio. The Military and Civil Police carried out an operation in the Alemão and Pena complexes, in the north of Rio, this Friday (Jan 24). One man died and a police officer was injured.
For the mayor, the State has a monopoly on force and must act harshly against criminals, but it is not equal to them.
“Maybe the bandit wants to kill you straight away, put you 7 feet off the ground, the State cannot want that. The State must seek to arrest and punish those who commit crimes.”these.
