Kaya Kalas from Ankara: Turkey is an important partner but differences remain for Cyprus

References to Cyprus and its “ambiguous” stance regarding the sanctions against Russia were included in her statements by the High Representative of the European Union, after the meeting she had today 24/1/2025 in Ankara with the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan.

“Turkey is one of our most important partners, a candidate country for EU membership, and as an important NATO ally, it plays a central role in European security,” Kaya Kalas initially emphasized.

“Our economic partnership is stronger than ever”

“Our economic partnership is stronger than ever and there is huge potential for cooperation on a wide range of issues: from trade, innovation to the fight against terrorism,” said the European diplomat.

However, he pointed out that there are “differences”, especially with regard to , but also “gaps” around the implementation of sanctions against Russia.

He also added that progress in issues related to the rule of law and human rights are necessary for Turkey to move forward on its European path. He also noted that common goals and issues concerning EU-Turkey relations are discussed through the high-level dialogue.

The developments in Syria could not be missing from the discussion of Mrs. Call with Mr. Fidan. “The fall of the Assad regime comes with hope, but also with many challenges,” said K. Kalas, noting that the EU’s goal is for the Syrian government to respect the diversity of the entire Syrian people. He also underlined Turkey’s “legitimate concerns” about security in Syria, adding that “we agree that ISIS [Ισλαμικό Κράτος] it should be crushed.”

Refugees will be able to return to Syria when Syria becomes a safe and stable country

He added that any actions by Turkey in northern Syria “should take into account the delicate balance of the hopeful and fragile future” of the country. He also praised Turkey’s assistance in receiving and hosting a large number of Syrian refugees, noting that the refugees will be able to return to Syria when Syria becomes a safe and stable country.

In the matter of Ukraine, K. Kalas stressed that, as the Russian invasion enters its 4th year, the EU’s priority is to strengthen that country’s position, “because there are no signs that Putin wants peace.” He recalled that the EU has granted more than 134 billion euros to Ukraine, making it the biggest supporter of Kiev, has trained about 75,000 Ukrainian soldiers until the end of February and has imposed on Russia the most severe sanctions in history. “We all want peace, but we need a sustainable peace,” he stressed.
