Maranhão receives R $ 30 million to become a space center

FNDCT investment aims to promote the state as a strategic for satellite launch and technological development

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, this Friday (24.Jan.2025), an investment of R $ 30 million from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development for promote Maranhão as a strategic center of the Brazilian space program.

Accompanied by the governor of Maranhão, (PSB), the minister visited the Aerospace Aerospace Propulsion Laboratory at UFMA (Federal University of Maranhão). She highlighted the importance of Alcântara’s base and her privileged location for the Brazilian space program and the Maranhão economy.

“This area is part of the National Defense Strategy and the Brazilian Space Program, which is based on Alcântara, a privileged position. This creates a new reality, even for the economy of Maranhão ”he said.

The minister also announced the construction of a propelent factory in São Luís. The investment is part of the R $ 486.8 million for the program, which includes 2 other launcher vehicle projects hired by Finep.

Governor Brandão highlighted the strategic location of Maranhão, near the Ecuador line, which reduces rocket launch costs.

The project aims to increase economic development, generation of qualified jobs and income increase, combating regional asymmetry. “This investment is fundamental for the national industry and the Northeast”added Luciana.

The ministry also studies the creation of a space for space research in Maranhão, focused on the development of launchers and satellites vehicles, aligned with the agency’s guidelines to strengthen regional vocations in science, technology and innovation.
