Transport Minister Renan Filho and Federal Deputy Aécio Neves (PSDB-MG) starred in a public clash on social networks on Friday, 24. The exchange of criticism occurred after the parliamentary questioned the viability of the BR concession contract -381, signed by the Lula administration on Wednesday, 22, in Brasilia. Known as a “Highway of Death”, the duplication of the road has been expected for decades.
In an Instagram publication, Aécio, who ruled Minas Gerais from 2003 to 2010, maintained skeptical tone regarding the execution of duplication.
“After decades of promises and neglect, the Lula government signed the concession contract to duplicate BR-381. The work never left the role during the 14 years of Lula and Dilma government. Now is the question: Can the miners finally believe that the duplication will be completed? Or are we facing another chapter of postponed promises? ”He wrote.
Renan Filho replied, stating that the launch of the works of the first 100 days of contract will be on the 6th. In addition, the minister criticized previous administrations for alleged errors in the administration of the federal highways.
“You missed you to remember that in the FHC government you have state federal highways in Minas Gerais to allegedly the State Government make the necessary investments and, years later, returned them, without the ‘promised’ investments and worse conservation,”, countered.
BR-381, which connects the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, records one of the highest accident rates in the country, being nicknamed the “Highway of Death”. Duplication of the road is an old demand for the miners and has been the focus of political and social debates for decades.

Prior to the clash with Aécio, Renan Filho had already criticized the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), during the signing ceremony of the contract. He stated that the governor’s absence at the event showed more political interest than concern with the work. “It seems that the charge is more political and less for the work, because the manager can do everything […] He can not just prioritize the policy against the interest of the citizen, ”said the minister.
The Federal Government formalized on Wednesday the signing of the concession contract of BR-381/MG. The highway will be administered by the Nova 381 concessionaire, from Group 4A Investments, with an investment forecast of R $ 10 billion in 30 years of concession, already considering amounts amortized in the long run (Capex) and Operating Expenses (OPEX). Lula stated that the government’s goal is to cheapen the toll price for poorest people, while prioritizing the quality of the roads.
