When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 and ash fell on the ancient city of Pompeii, rich and poor alike were affected. The city’s largest private house was also buried in the disaster. Its wealthy residents had not only accumulated numerous works of art, but had also had the floors decorated with magnificent mosaics. One of them was in the so-called exedra, a typical semicircular room of ancient Roman houses.
