Tourism is the most important sector of the Spanish economy.
Despite the significant increase in prices, hotels in Spain recorded a record number of overnight stays last year. TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.
The number of overnight stays in 2024 rose almost 5% to 363.6 million compared to the previous record year, Spain’s statistics office INE said.
Hotels in Spain, which is a popular holiday destination, are becoming more and more expensive. According to INE, the average price of a room last year increased by 7.4% to 121.5 euros. However, average occupancy increased to 61.4%, which was 2.2% more than in 2023.
The record number of overnight stays was mainly due to foreign guests, whose number increased by 7.5% to approximately 242 million. The most overnight stays were for tourists from the United Kingdom and Germany, with 60.3 million and 42.6 million overnight stays, respectively. The number of overnight stays by domestic guests increased by only 0.2% last year.
With a total of 49.5 million overnight stays (more than three and a half million more than the previous year), the most popular Spanish destination was once again the Mediterranean island of Mallorca last year, with hotels there recording 49.5 million overnight stays (over 3.5 million more than in 2023).
Tourism is the most important sector of the Spanish economy, accounting for more than 12% of the country’s GDP. It employs more than 2.5 million people.
