The minister’s speech, Rui Costa, suggesting that Brazilians change orange consumption for another fruit, due to the high price of food, became a meme on social networks. The statement was made in an interview with journalists on Thursday (24.Jan.2025).
“The international price is as expensive as here. What can you do? Change the fruit we will consume. Instead of orange, another fruit. It’s no use downloading the rate because there is no product out there to put it inside ”said the minister.

Orange production
Brazil is the largest orange and orange juice producer in the world – especially the state of São Paulo. According to Fundecitrus, the 2023/24 orange crop of the São Paulo Citrical Belt and Triangle/Southwest Mineiro was 307.22 million boxes of 40.8 kg.
According to the (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics), orange prices reached a record in 2024, with a box of 40.8 kg being negotiated above R $ 100. The appreciation was pulled by heated demand and reduced supply of Fruit, for the predominantly dry climate and with high temperatures during the development of the season in the citrus belt.
