The coalition SNS wants to extend the election period in local governments from the current four to six years. It would concern elections to self-governing regional bodies and elections to municipal self-governing bodies. The SNS wants to enshrine the change in the Constitution of the Slovak Republic. TASR was informed about this by the director of the office of the president of the SNS, Zuzana Škopcová.

“In connection with the changes in the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak National Party will propose an extension of the election date and the duration of the election period in self-government for a period of six years,” the party said in a statement.

The SNS is convinced that, following the example of some states, the extension of the term of office of deputies, or top representatives of self-government for a period of six years, is proven. “Croatia is a good example. Our goal is that MPs, respectively mayors, mayors, county mayors acquired the possibility of longer working in self-government. It is obvious that whenever the elections alternate in a very short period of time, it is not possible to complete large investment projects, to ensure the development of cities, municipalities and higher territorial units (VÚC).” SNS stated that four years is a very short period for realizing long-term visions.

“We believe that the ZMOS, the Union of Slovak Cities and representatives of the VÚC will welcome the proposal to extend this period for a period of six years. We believe that we will also find support from experienced political parties,” concluded Škopcová.
