Trump changes the name of the Gulf of Mexico and a mountain in Alaska: “American legacy”

This Friday (24/1), the Trump administration’s Department of the Interior said it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America (since Americans refer to the country as America), in addition to changing the nomenclature from Alaska’s Denali Peak to Mount McKinley.

The changes were ordered by Trump hours after assuming the presidency on Monday (20/1), fulfilling a campaign promise.

“As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now be officially known as the Gulf of America, and the highest peak in North America will once again be named Mount McKinley,” the department said in a statement.

The Alaskan peak has been named Mount McKinley before, in honor of U.S. President William McKinley, but was renamed in 1975 at the state’s request to Denali Peak, which means “high” in the Koyukon Indian language.

According to the department, the changes reinforce the United States’ commitment to “preserving the extraordinary American heritage and ensuring that future generations of Americans celebrate the legacy of their heroes and historic assets.”

Although the United States Geological Survey changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico, the change is unlikely to be recognized internationally. Mexico even said that the name has been a reference to maritime navigation dating back hundreds of years.

Hillary Clinton Laughter

Democrat Hillary Clinton laughed after US President-elect Donald Trump announced at Monday’s inauguration ceremony the name change of the Gulf of Mexico. During the ceremony, the former first lady and former secretary of state was seated next to her husband, former president Bill Clinton.

On social media, internet users commented on Clinton’s reaction. “We are all Hillary Clinton,” said one user on X (formerly Twitter). “She is my president, I love her”, commented another. Hillary competed in the presidential elections in 2016 precisely with Donald Trump, to whom she lost the election.

“I think changing the name is perfectly plausible. The Gulf of Mexico is surrounded by the United States,” wrote another internet user. “She doesn’t like her country”, accused another.
