Davi Alcolumbre, Eduardo Gomes and Humberto Costa are the favorites for the positions of presidency, vice-presidency and second vice-presidency
They will elect him in and with a strong favorite to assume the presidency: (União Brasil-AP), senator who has already presided over the Upper House from 2019 to 2021.
He is an ally of the current commander, (PSD-MG), and has the endorsement of PSD, MDB, PT, PL, PP, PDT, PSB and União Brasil for the presidency. In total, there are 69 senators. At least 41 are needed to be elected in the 1st round.
União Brasil, Alcolumbre’s party, will emerge as the big winner. Today, there is no space on the Board of Directors. He should leave the election with command of the House, despite having only the 5th largest bench, with 7 senators.
The PL, the 2nd largest bench (14 seats), should hold the vice-presidency, with (TO). If achieved, the result would be a victory for the party that also does not occupy any position on the Board of Directors. The reason for the exclusion is that the party invested in (PL-RN)’s candidacy in the 2023 election and was left out of the negotiations.
Party of the president (PT), the PT must elect (PE) as 2nd vice-president. Currently, the party is with the 1st Secretariat, with (PT-SE).
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd secretariats must be occupied by (PSD-PB), (MDB-RO) and (PSB-RR), respectively.
There are still doubts about who will lead the 4th Secretariat. The vacancy must be reserved for the PP. (PP-SE) and (PP-RR) are in contention.
Podemos and PDT, which together today occupy 3 seats at the Board, should remain space between the incumbents.
In total, 11 positions will be up for grabs, including incumbents and substitutes.
The election for president is on. The meeting to elect 2 vice-presidents, 4 secretaries and 4 substitutes is now underway. The tendency is for center and center-right parties to increase their dominance in 5 of the 7 incumbent positions – today, they have 4.
DIRECTORS’ DUTIES
The Board of Directors performs the functions of command, agenda setting and administrative and institutional roles.
The president of the Senate also holds the position of president of the National Congress. This means that it convenes and commands the Senate sessions and also the Congress sessions. The latter are used to analyze presidential vetoes and budget projects.
