Lula government classified treatment given to Brazilians as “degrading”; Procedure is standard in the United States

Itamaraty said on Saturday (25.jan.2025) that the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) will ask for explanations to the administration of President Donald Trump (Republican Party) on treatment “Degrading” given to Brazilians deported from the United States.

The group, which arrived in Brazil on Friday (24.jan), was transported handcuffed. Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, that the handcuffs were removed when the plane landed in Brazilian territory.

The procedure, which is standard in the US, was criticized by members of the president’s government (PT).

According to the calculation of Poder360the deported are Brazilians who were mostly arrested in the US for being in the country irregularly and can no longer resort to US courts.

In the United States, when someone is under the custody of the state for committing an infringement – in illegally entered the country – the standard procedure is to be handcuffed when transported from one place to another.

No matter the severity of the offense: Everyone needs to have limited movements. In some cases, the handcuffs are placed on the wrists and ankles of those who are detained. This is done to protect police officers from eventual attacks from the prisoners – unknowingly during flights, as was the case of the plane that brought Brazilians who were illegal in the US back to Brazil.

As in Manaus was a FAB aircraft that continued the route to Belo Horizonte, the deported ones were already under Brazilian jurisdiction and it would no longer be necessary to use handcuffs or follow the legal procedures of the US. Strictly speaking, the order of the Ministry of Justice only expressed something that would happen anyway.

The Brazilians arrived in Manaus on Friday (24.jan) and are part of the first wave of the country after the (Republican Party), on Monday (20.jan). These deportations, however, are part of an agreement signed in 2018, During the government of the then president (MDB), starting in 2019. That is, they are unrelated to the measures signed by the Republican.

According to Poder360The government of Joe Biden (Democratic Party) deported more Brazilians than those of Barack Obama (Democratic Party) and Donald Trump. From 2021 to 2024, 7,168 Brazilians were deported, which corresponds to 1.31% of the total deportations, which totaled 545,252.
