Brazilians deported from the USA with "handcuffs and chains" on their hands and feet. Brazil accuses Trump of "violating" repatriation agreement

A flight from the USA that was destined for Belo Horizonte stopped at Eduardo Gomes airport, in Manaus, where authorities saw the “degrading” situation in which the returnees found themselves.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send a request for clarification to the North American administration regarding the treatment of repatriates who arrived in Brazil handcuffed and handcuffed. The repatriation flight was carried out by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a published this Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers the episode “unacceptable” and says that Brazilians were treated in a “degrading” way. According to the Brazilian authority, this situation violates an agreement signed with the USA in 2018.

“The indiscriminate use of handcuffs and chains violates the terms of the agreement with the USA, which provides for the dignified, respectful and humane treatment of returnees”, the note reads.

“The Brazilian government considers it unacceptable that the conditions agreed with the North American government are not respected. Brazil agreed to carry out repatriation flights, starting in 2018, to shorten the time spent by these nationals in North American detention centers, due to irregular immigration and with no possibility of appeal”, the note states.

The flight, which was destined for Belo Horizonte, made a stop at Eduardo Gomes airport, in Manaus, where the situation generated outrage from both returnees and Brazilian authorities.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to the repatriates being handcuffed, the flight also faced other problems that compromised security conditions. The aircraft had problems with the air conditioning system and other technical failures, which led Brazilian authorities to not authorize the trip to Belo Horizonte.

The same note also states that the indignation of the 88 deported Brazilians on board, who felt humiliated by the treatment they were subjected to, was also a determining factor in the decision to suspend the flight.
