Nearby communities are promoting an electronic petition asking ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation) to call for new guides to work at the site. The last notice was made in 2021.
Professionals consulted privately by the Panel believe that, with new guides, the fee charged to tourists could be reduced.
To enter the park, ICMBio does not charge admission, but requires that the visitor be accompanied by registered guides. The amounts charged reach R$300.
“This action will create employment opportunities and expand tourism options, representing a significant advance for our region. and must be accessible to everyone”, says the petition, which had more than 960 signatures on Friday (24 ).
“Although we have seen a significant growth in the number of visitors, which reached almost 40 thousand in 2024, ICMBio in São Raimundo Nonato decided to abolish the entrance fee, which could generate revenue for the preservation of the park. A ticket for R$25 per person could raise approximately R$1 million annually, money that could strengthen preservation initiatives and directly benefit the surrounding communities”, adds the text.
Residents of the region also defend the inclusion of the local population and young people among the guides, so that the local economy can be boosted.
When contacted, ICMBio said, in a note, that a new notice is scheduled for the second half of 2025 and that “it will take into account technical criteria and practical knowledge, respecting and valuing the experience of those who have built relationships with the unit throughout the time”.
In the petition, the organizers also ask for a fee to be charged at fair and cheap prices to assist in the maintenance of the park and the expansion of tourist circuits and the use of underutilized areas.
Regarding the unit’s infrastructure, ICMBio states that, in the last two years, around R$2 million was invested and 40 temporary employees were hired for the infrastructure and monitoring areas.
