Ramalho Eanes turns 90, Marcelo and Cavaco pay tribute to him

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Cavaco Silva highlight the sense of state of the first President elected in a democracy.

António Ramalho Eanes celebrates his 90th birthday this Saturday. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa pays tribute to him, considering that the first President of the Republic elected in democracy always put the national interest first.

“He served Portugal and serves Portugal in terms of his civic commitment, his ability to place, with a vision of the State, the national interest always first and with energy, with creativity, with imagination and always with consideration and with common sense in the expression of the popular will, which is one of the factors of constant stability in our Democracy”, reads the website of the Presidency of the Republic.

Eanes won the first post-April 25 presidential elections with 62% of the votes and five years later he was re-elected in the first round.

In the 10 years he was in charge of Belém, he lived with seven prime ministers, received the figures that marked the second half of the 20th century and maintained an almost implacable serenity, even when tempers flared.
as was the case of a meeting with Portuguese emigrants in France in 1979.

Former president Cavaco Silva also reveals a deep admiration for the life path of someone who, he says, served the country “with honesty
seriousness of character and sense of State”.
