The change of typology is carried out by the Secretariat of Professional and Technological Education (Setec), of the MEC, through technical criteria such as authorization time

The Ministry of Education (MEC) published on Monday (20 January 2025) Ordinance No. 34/2025, which creates 30 new campuses from the transformation of advanced units of Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFs). The change doubles the service capacity of these units, from 400 to 800 students each. In total, 20 federal institutes from 18 states were included, with the expectation that 12,000 new vacancies in professional and technological education courses will be created in the coming years.

“Our idea is that we can expand technical education integrated into secondary education and this is also a demand of 80% of young people at this stage. Brazil currently has only 11% of integrated secondary education enrollments. We want to reach 35% in the next five years. It is a bold goal for countries in [Organização para a Cooperação e Desenvolvimento Econômico]but it is important that the student leaves high school with a profession. And that doesn’t mean that this young person can’t also go to university.”defends the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana.

The change of typology is carried out by the Secretariat of Professional and Technological Education (Setec), of the MEC, through technical criteria such as authorization time, technical course offering, number of enrollments, existing building and infrastructure. After the changes made by the ordinance, there are today 27 advanced campuses in the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education.

“We are meeting a decade’s worth of demand. The transformation of these campuses has a positive impact on students, with more places on courses. It also qualifies the relationship with local and regional productive arrangements and also generates benefits for the community through research and extension projects”, highlights the Secretary of Professional and Technological Education of the MEC, Marcelo Bregagnoli.

The new typology also expands the number of teachers and administrative technicians in education. The transfer of these permanent positions, in addition to management positions and bonus functions, for the operation of the campuses is subject to their creation by law.

New campus

The ordinance also authorized the operation of the Pedra Branca do Amapari Campus, of the Federal Institute of Amapá (Ifap). The unit, which functioned as a reference center, has an area of 821m² and is made up of classrooms, laboratories, library, cafeteria, administrative rooms and a common area. Currently, it offers 300 students subsequent technical courses (for high school graduates) in Administration, Environment, Human Resources and Environmental Control, in the form of distance education (EaD), as well as professional qualification courses.

With the new campus, the Federal Network now has 686 units present in all Brazilian states and the Federal District, offering free professional, technical, higher education and postgraduate qualification courses to more than 1.6 million students. There are more than 12,900 courses available, in addition to extension projects for the community and the development of applied research.
