Information was provided by the South African national parks agency SAN Parks
A tourist died on Saturday after being attacked by an elephant in Kruger National Park, South Africa, the South African national parks agency SAN Parks announced this Sunday.
In a statement, SAN Parks reports that the tourist “was attacked and trampled” by the animal.
Due to the “sensitive nature” of the “tragic accident,” the agency asks that people “refrain from posting or sharing photos and videos of the incident on social media.”
Popular among safari enthusiasts, Kruger, which has an unfenced area of about 20,000 square kilometers and extends into Mozambique, is the largest national park in South Africa.
Except in fenced campsites and some picnic areas, leaving the vehicle is prohibited.
SAN Parks also indicated that “new information about the circumstances of the accident will be communicated in due course.”
Elephant attacks in the region are not rare.
In 2021, an alleged poacher was killed by elephants in the same national park, and, in 2023, 50 people were killed and 85 injured after an attack by wild animals – mainly elephants – in Zimbabwe, a country that borders South Africa .
