The United States interrupted passport emission with gender X for people who identify themselves as non -binary, that is, those who do not recognize themselves as male or female. The decision was made after a decree signed by President Donald Trump on the first day of his term, as statement from the State Department, according to the AFP agency.
The US government had begun to issue passports with option X in April 2022 during the management of Joe Biden. However, after Trump’s inauguration last Monday (20), he signed a decree that recognizes only two genres: male and female.
In his Capitol speech, Trump stated that the new policy aims to “restore biological truth” and stipulated that “federal funds should not be used to promote gender ideology”, a term frequently used by conservatives to refer to issues related to sexual and gender diversity.
The decree establishes, among other measures, that gender X will be removed from official government documents, such as passports and visas, which will faithfully reflect the sex attributed to birth. The first American passport with gender X was symbolically delivered in October 2021, before the beginning of official emissions, and was intended for people who did not fit into traditional gender criteria.
During his campaign, Trump criticized diversity, equity and inclusion policies implemented by the Biden government and the private sector. In his speech, he promised to end what he called “transgender delirium” in the US.
In addition, he announced that he would order the suspension of federal aid for gender -oriented hormonal treatments and suggested prohibiting trans women’s participation in women’s sports competitions, as it is already in force in schools in many states of the country.
