The federal government said in a statement on Sunday (26) that Brazilians deported from the United States over the weekend had unworthy treatment that violates the repatriation agreement with the country.

On Friday (24), 88 citizens from Brazil arrived in Manaus (AM) chained and handcuffed. They reported abuse during the deportation flight and said technical problems affected the second flight.

“The indiscriminate use of handcuffs and currents violates the terms in accordance with the US, which provides for the decent, respectful and human treatment of repatrias,” said the federal government.

Reception in Belo Horizonte

After the first stop in Manaus, Brazilians should go to Belo Horizonte (MG) on the same plane that came from the US. However, Brazilian authorities did not authorize follow -up because of the use of handcuffs and currents and the poor of the aircraft.

The Brazilians then stayed overnight in the Amazonian capital and only on Saturday (25) were transported by a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) plane to the mining capital. There, they were received by the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Macaé Evaristo.

“I am here at the request of President Lula to accompany your landing and to make this reception. Our position is that countries may have their migratory policies, but never violate anyone’s human rights. ”

Deportation

The order to repact the Brazilians was issued by the government of former President Joe Biden, following the rules of an agreement between Brazil and the United States in 2017.

According to the federal government, Brazil agreed with repatriation flights to shorten Brazilians’ time to stay in detention centers in the US.

On January 10, a US flight had already brought 100 Brazilians deported to Confins Airport. In 2024, 17 flights performed the deportation of more than 2,100 people, surpassing the 14 flights that occurred in 2023, when approximately 1,400 individuals were repatriated.
