When on January 27, 1945, a battalion of the 322nd Infantry Division of the 60th Army of the I. Ukrainian Front of the Red Army reached the huge complex of the Auschwitz concentration camp in the South Polish city of the same name (Polish: Oświęcim), offered the commander Anatoly Shapiro as follows : “Skeletons from people came towards us. They wore strip suits, no shoes. It was freezing cold. They couldn’t speak, not even turn their heads.”
