They also talked together about the royal family.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and new US President Donald Trump agreed on a joint meeting in the near future during a phone call on Sunday. They also talked about the British royal family and relations between their countries, which they described as friendly. Reuters reported on Monday, writes TASR.

“Both leaders stressed the importance of close and warm relations between the UK and the US. The President spoke of his respect and affection for the Royal Family,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

“They agreed to meet soon and look forward to further negotiations,” the statement said. According to Reuters, Starmer is trying to promote Britain to Trump and major American companies and to get new sources of investment to help the stagnant British economy.

Trump’s first foreign trip

On Sunday, Trump said on board the US government’s special Air Force One that his first foreign trip would probably be to Saudi Arabia or Britain. Therefore, many British media began to speculate about the planning of Trump’s state visit to London.

The late Queen Elizabeth II. met Trump during his first term in office in 2019. He then called her a “great woman” who “never made a mistake.”

The Downing Street statement from the joint phone call did not mention the topic of defense spending, where, according to Reuters, disagreements between Trump and Starmer could arise. The American president recently declared that NATO member states should increase their defense budgets to five percent of GDP per year.

The officials also did not discuss the Chagos Islands, a topic where Britain is awaiting a review by US authorities of its agreement with Mauritius over the future of a joint US-UK military base.

Starmer and Trump also discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, with the British leader praising Trump’s role in negotiating a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. “They also discussed trade and the economy, with the Prime Minister talking about ongoing deregulation to boost growth,” the British Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
