Salmonella is usually transmitted by food or water contaminated by the bacteria of the same name, but a new study suggests that if it has a pet dog, it is likely that it is also susceptible to infection.
Researchers from the Pennsylvania State University (PSU), have found that pet dogs can be a point of transmission of Salmonella non -typhoid and antibiotic resistant.
Bacteria attacks cells that coat the intestine and make it difficult to absorb water by the body, causing stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, headaches and fever, symptoms that can last four to seven days.
“Especially with Salmonella, we think of the role of agriculture and transmission, namely in the role of eggs and beef in transmission,” began by explaining Sophia Kenney, quoted by.
“However, we don’t let the cows sleep in our beds or lick our face. We have a very close bond with animalsespecially with dogs, ”said the researcher.
According to the US University, Salmonella infections in dogs are not very common, but scientists are aware of the existence of outbreaks of food related to pets for pets or arising from contact with contaminated foods.
At first of the investigation, the team checked the registrations of the Food & Drug Administration veterinary network from the United States and found 87 cases of salmonella in pet dogs from 2017 to 2023.
Then sought corresponding human cases, having found 77 cases where the bacteria will have spread from dogs to humans.
“It’s important maintain simple hygiene practiceshow to wash their hands, which are very necessary to protect our friends from four -legged and ourselves. We must respect Salmonella’s lasting threat and remain vigilant to avoid its propagation, ”warned epidemiologist Nkuchia M’ikanatha.
