Hamas says 8 of the 33 hostages that will be released are dead

The Palestinian extremist group Hamas reported on Monday (27.jan.2025) that 8 of the 33 Israeli hostages that will be released are dead. According to a group member to the list was sent to the Israeli government through ceasefire mediators. The liberation of hostages is part of the 1st phase of the truce signed between Israel and Hamas on January 17.

The Israeli government estimates that and a third of them are dead. Another 3 hostages should be released on Thursday (30.jan), second (27.jan).

Hamas has released 7 Israeli hostages since the beginning of the ceasefire. Israel pledged to release about 1,900 detainees and Palestinian prisoners during the 1st phase of the trucewhich will last 42 days.

During this phase, it is determined that there is:

  • Safety in the Philadelphia Corridor (territory along the border between the Gaza Strip with Egypt);
  • gradual return of operations on the Rafah border in the Gaza Strip, and Egypt; Sick people and humanitarian cases are expected to be referred to Egyptian territory to receive treatment and that humanitarian aid is allowed to enter the enclave;
  • Permission for unarmed northern residents of the Palestinian enclave to return to their cities – the conflict, most Palestinians has moved south;
  • Israeli removal and troops from the Netzarim corridor, in the center of the Gaza Strip.

A 2ª EAPA It should start on February 3, on the 16th day of the agreement. This phase includes the release of more hostages and prisoners.

The Israeli Ministry of Justice said that it should free up to 1,904 people – between them, 737 who were trapped for different reasons and 1,167 Palestinians who were arrested in the Gaza Strip during the terrestrial offensive of the FDI (Israeli Defense Forces) .

The forecast is that the release of hostages and prisoners last 42 days, “During which there will be a break in the fighting”. According to a document published on January 17 by the ministry (in Hebrew – PDF – 637 KB), prisoners will be released only after Israeli hostages are no longer under Hamas domain.

A 3rd and last phase The ceasefire agreement must also be started on February 3. This is when negotiations begin to reconstruct the Gaza Strip.
