The ATP (Association of Professional Tennis Players) released its updated ranking this Monday (27). João Fonseca appears on the list of the first hundred for the first time, the youngest Brazilian to join the group in history.

At 18 years and 5 months, the carioca surpassed Cássio Motta, who entered the top 100 at 19 years and 5 months. Gustavo Kuerten, who would be champion at Roland Garros before turning 21, became part of the list at 19 years and 11 months.

João is today the only athlete under 19 years old in the group of the top one hundred. With the 80 points he obtained in his campaign at the Australian Open, he reached 600 and occupied 99th place.

Brazil, for the first time since 2017, has three tennis players in the top 100 of the world rankings. They are the Paraná native, Thiago Seyboth Wild, 24 years old, 76th place, Fonseca and the Ceará native Thiago Monteiro, 30, 100th.

“I’m very happy,” said the youngster, following his second-round exit in Australia, which ended a 14-game winning streak. “I can only be grateful for the opportunities that are emerging, I will continue working to be increasingly prepared. I will work to have a better place in the rankings. Let’s go with everything!”

The boy’s next commitment is not worth points in the ATP rankings. He is part of the Brazil team that will face France away from home, in Orleans, on Saturday (1st) and Sunday (2nd), in the Davis Cup.
