The National Socialist Youth Commission (JS) took place on January 19, at the Socialist Party headquarters in Lisbon. This was the first meeting of the new term, after the National Congress that, last month, elected Sofia Pereira as secretary general. Among the main points of the agenda, the election of the new deputy general secretaries and national secretaries were elected.
Among the newly elected, João Pimenta, a young natural socialist of Lagoa, was highlighted in the Algarve, who was elected national secretary of socialist youth. President of the Socialist Youth of the Lagoa Council, João Pimenta stressed that “it is an honor and a privilege, which are not overlapping the weight and responsibility of being a national JS leader”.
The young socialist added: “This election should serve as hope and motivation for any young man, because it doesn’t matter where we are born, but what we defend.” This milestone is historic for Lagoa’s policy, being the first time a young man in the region assumes a position at the JS National Secretariat.
João Pimenta succeeds Abel Matinhos and will represent the Algarve in the National Agency of Socialist Youth. About the new function, he assured: “I assume the function with a high degree of commitment to young socialists in particular and the Algarve in general. This is a great opportunity to represent our region and ensure that issues that directly impact the Algarve are debated and valued on the spheres of political decision. ”
Committed to responding to the needs of Algarve youth, João Pimenta stressed that “it is mandatory to rethink that Algarve we want.” Among the priorities of his mandate, the leader pointed to the promotion of sustainable tourism, economic diversification, the fight against young unemployment and early school abandonment, as well as the creation of affordable housing policies.
The socialist youth reaffirmed the commitment to promote public policies that guarantee a better future for new generations, always based on the nonconformity of youth. João Pimenta concluded his intervention by citing António Arnaut: “There is no policy without the ability to respond to people’s problems, and the key to the renewal of this ability is in youth.”
